Mikhail Bulgakov occupies a special place in Russian literature. Moscow is also impregnated by its spirit, the expression "Moscow Bulgakov" means a whole era, a specific atmosphere in the streets, squares and houses mentioned by the author.
One of the most famous houses related to Bulgakov and his novel "Master and Marguerite" is that located on Bolshaia Sadovaia street, 10, the former building of Piguite.
Apartment No. 50 described in the novel as "an unhealthy apartment" was actually the apartment of Bulgakov. For decades, this house, the entrance and the staircase have been the subject of pilgrimage by Muscovites and tourists attracted by the magic of Bulgakov's work. The apartment houses the memorial museum, dedicated to the writer and the characters of his novels.
In 2005, our agency in partnership with Moskomarkhitectura and Moskomnasledie developed a project to restore the historical and cultural monument "Maison de Piguite". This project included a preliminary stage of development of the museum in the former granary located in part B above the Bulgakov apartment.
At that time, it was an idea that inspired us to organize an internal competition in the agency. The title of the contest was "Walk on the Roof". It is exactly a walk on the roofs that could be associated with our imagination of the work of Bulgakov. Among the works proposed, that of Anna Vishneva was chosen unanimously. His project represents a glass gallery that pierces the roof. Next, the museum is divided into two parts: one white and one black. This corresponds, on the one hand, to the two parts of the novel, on the other hand, to the annoyed period; This duality also reflects the special character of the writer.
ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT DESIGN
This proposal for the development of the museum space is elaborated according to the conditions established by the Bulgakov Museum. We decided to keep the essential ideas of the initial project and apply them adapting to the new conditions.
The project envisages the creation of an exhibition space forming part of the Bulgakov Museum, located in apartment 50.
Functionally, the two levels are linked by two stairs and an elevator. The lower level, in the memorial apartment is located in the main part of the exhibition. The upper level added will accommodate exhibition spaces that could be used for conferences or seminars or other cultural and educational activities. A library and conservation funds will also be installed. A buffet next to the library will welcome visitors.
Structurally, the new space will constitute 5 functional zones:
- exhibition hall dedicated to the work of Bulgakov;
- an exhibition hall for exhibitions or other academic or educational events related to the Bulgakov era;
- a gallery located above all the rooms dedicated to the theme "walk on the roof";
- a set of premises: library, office and buffet;
- technical services premises, including conservation funds, ancillary premises and toilets.
All these rooms are organized so that they can be used all at once or separately.
For PMRs, an elevator is provided on the exterior fa?ade and a system of escalators on the stairs.
In order to allow the evacuation of persons in case of fire, two escape stairs are provided; They correspond to the height of the building and have an autonomous exit.
General area of the whole museum on two levels - 750 m?.
